A-YUT-TA-HEY
Watercolor on Rag Paper
22 x 30
| When Jim Cody and I stepped from bright daylight into the dark hogan, it took a few seconds for my eyes to adjust. What I then saw was this old Indian lady. She had a startled look in her eyes that reminded me of a wild animal captured by man, and I felt like an intruder. She didn’t speak English so I sat at a respectful distance and listened to them talk in the Navajo language. (She was talking to Jim but kept a close eye on me.) Blowing sand drifted silently down from the fire hole and glittered in a small shaft of light. I had my camera, but hesitated to use it until we were taking our leave. Then, I dared one shot over my shoulder; this painting is the result of that very bad photograph. |
