Early in October, Harold and Emmert picked apples from two trees that grew near the gate. The apples were pretty wormy because the trees had not been sprayed, but many could be salvaged with a knife. Some apples were usually left on the trees, and I picked them a little later in the month. After a frost, they became much sweeter.

Notice how the sunlight accents the translucence of Harold's right ear.
