I did this painting on location—inside Emmert’s barn. Ancient horse collars hang from pegs on the dusty limestone wall. Spider webs abound. Old fixtures of a defunct milking machine hang from above. The rafters are hand-hewn from oak—ax marks still visible. The moldy aroma of old straw and leather pervades the air. The darkness is broken by the warmth of afternoon sunlight streaming through the window and highlighting the silhouette of the waiting cat. And I think, while I work in this silent place, of the spirits of those who came before me and left small reminders of their presence here.. .on leather, stone, and wood. |
