This is the stairway that leads to my summer sleeping quarters on the second floor. One of Emmert’s denim jackets hangs on a hook and throws an elongated shadow along the plastered wall. The light from above adds a touch of mystery, leaving the viewer with questions about its source, and curiosity about what might he found in the rooms above. At the left of the open door is a closed door with a sliver of light showing through the space at the bottom, which asks yet another question. Aside from the psychological aspect, the pictorial composition leans heavily on straight lines and rectangular shapes, which contrast and reinforce the soft, irregular form of the coat and shadow. I observed this stairway for nearly twenty years before I decided to paint it. If one looks closely enough, lines and names can be seen inscribed on the door molding where my children marked their growth. |
