I did this painting in 1991 when I was preparing to move to my new studio in the city. After 22 years spent painting in the left-hand corner of this room, I decided I should do a painting of it. I am often struck by the fact that it takes so little in the way of personal comfort and niceties to produce my work. An easel, a chair, a room, and photographs of my children were all the creature comforts I needed to bring me happiness.
The title, Roots and Wings, comes from a little card someone sent me. (It’s taped to the wall just beneath the calendar.) I like the quote for its all-encompassing simplicity. It reads: “There are only two things of lasting value that we can give to our children: one is roots, the other is wings.” |
