At the northwest corner of Emmert’s farm is a small scope of woods, three acres at most. The trees are a mix of oak and hickory and one dead cottonwood. They stand on a slight rise that forms a circular shape, looking pretty much like an island surrounded by a vast sea of corn and soybeans. A humpback ridge curves through the center defined by the indentation of an old cow trail. The ridge drops away to where a natural spring oozes cool, clear water from a hole in the ground. The water comes slowly, but over the years it has made its mark, cutting its meandering way from the edge of the woods out into the fertile pasture, angling towards Emmerts house.

I often come here in the spring when the trees are just heginning to bud. When the bloodroot, violets, and blue-eyed grass are blooming. If I’m lucky and if I sit still long enough, a deer might wander by. . . and there are always a few fox squirrels that get agitated by my presence and flick their tails as they scold from a safe distance. But mostly, I enjoy the peaceful serenity of this secluded place...seemingly adrift from the rest of the world.
